(Riyadh, Saturday, 10 October 2015) The Philippine Embassy in Riyadh hosted a 1-day seminar for Philippine Curriculum Schools in Riyadh and the Eastern Region on the Updates and Current Guidelines on the Implementation of the K+12 program. Dr. Luz S. Almeda, DepEd NCR Regional Director, conducted the seminar for the school administrators of the eight (8) Philippine Curriculum Schools in Riyadh and two (2) in the Eastern Region.
During the day-long activity, Dr. Almeda explained in detail all the important features related to the implementation of the K+12 Program, as well as other topics, such as the Philippine Qualification Framework. Under this framework, the learners’ levels of educational qualifications are described and its recognition is based on standards of knowledge, skills and values acquired by the learners through different ways and methods. Also discussed was the Results Based Performance Management System (RPMS) where the educators and the other school personnel are continuously evaluated to ensure their improvement and growth in their line of work. The participants listened intently to the speaker and expressed their appreciation for being able to attend the seminar and put forward their queries regarding the guidelines being set by the Department of Education.

The Philippines is the last country in Asia, and one of only three countries worldwide with a 10-year pre-university cycle. The 12-year program is found to be the best period for learning basic education and is also the recognized standard for students and professionals globally. It covers 13 years of basic education with the following key stages: (1) Kindergarten to Grade 3; (2) Grades 4 to 6; (3) Grades 7 to 10 (Junior High School) and (4) Grades 11 to 12 (Senior High School).
The K+12 Basic Education Program was initially introduced to the Philippine Kindergarten Curriculum in School Year 2011. The following year, the Enhanced Curriculum for Grades 1 to 7 was implemented. With its enactment into law in 2014, the implementation of the K+12’s curriculum for Grades 11- 12 was completed.
During the seminar, Dr. Almeda mentioned that through the K+12 Basic Education Program, the DepEd aims to develop a holistic Filipino with 21st century skills. (i.e. skills development is already embedded in the curriculum and achieved through the learning competencies and performance standards set by the DepEd).

Most of the Philippine Curriculum Schools in Riyadh and Eastern Region are already implementing the K+12 program and currently in the process of applying for the implementation of the curriculum for Grades 11 to 12 (Senior High School) in their respective schools. As part of their accreditation to Senior High School, Dr. Almeda visited some of the Philippine Curriculum Schools in Riyadh before her return travel to Manila. (END)
