Philippine Embassy Celebrates the 125th Birth Anniversary of President Elpidio Quirino
(Riyadh, 16 November 2015) In celebration of the 125th Birth Anniversary of President Elpidio Quirino, the Philippine Embassy organized a photo exhibit featuring his life and times and his contribution to Philippine history. The activity was formally opened today by Ambassador Ezzedin H. Tago in a simple ribbon cutting ceremony.
The theme for this year’s event is “Elpidio Quirino 125: From Guro to Pangulo – One Teacher’s Journey to Greatness” where various programs and activities were organized in the Philippines and the Philippine foreign missions around the world, in his honor.
President Elpidio Quirino served as the 6th President of the Republic of the Philippines from 1948 until 1953 after the death of President Manuel Roxas. As President, he exemplified the statesman befitting the highest position in the land. Two of his notable contributions in Philippine history is the establishment of the Social Security Commission, in 1948 and the establishment of the Central Bank of the Philippines in 1949. Previously, he also served the nation in other capacities such as:
- Congressman for the 1st District of Ilocos Sur in 1919;
- Elected Senator in 1925 and was re-elected in 1931;
- Appointed as Secretary of Finance in 1935;
- Elected Vice-President, at the same time, appointed as Secretary of Foreign Affairs in 1946. As Secretary of Foreign Affairs, he established overseas diplomatic missions in the United Nations, the Americas, Europe and Asia.
The exhibit is part of the Philippine Embassy’s aim to further increase public awareness on Filipinos who have made valuable contributions in Philippine history. The President Elpidio Quirino exhibit will be open to all Filipino community in Riyadh from Monday, 16 November 2015 until Thursday, 19 November 2015 from 8:00 am until 4:00 pm at the Embassy lobby.
